How to download your TikTok data, and how long the wait actually is

TikTok's export is requested inside the app in about six taps and roughly ninety seconds. The reported wait is anywhere from a few minutes to four days, and once the file is ready TikTok keeps it available for about four days before it disappears. Written 2026-08-24.

The exact taps, in order

Your part of this is about two to four minutes. Everything after that is TikTok taking its time, and nothing you do speeds it up.

  1. Open your profile Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom right.
  2. Open the menu Tap the three lines at the top right, then tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Account It is near the top of the list, above Privacy.
  4. Tap Download your data This is the screen that matters. It has two tabs: Request data and Download data.
  5. Choose the file format Pick JSON. TXT is written for a person to read and is painful for any tool, including ours, to parse. If you already asked for TXT, request again as JSON.
  6. Choose what to include All data is the honest choice. Selecting only Activity is faster but leaves out the ads and interest categories, which are the part most people came for.
  7. Tap Request data Then leave the app. Nothing else you do speeds this up.
  8. Come back and download Open the same screen, switch to the Download data tab, and tap Download. TikTok asks for your password. Save the zip somewhere you will find it again.

How long it actually takes

WhatHow long reported
Reported typical waitA few minutes to two days for most accounts.
Reported outer limitUp to four days, which is the window TikTok's own help text describes.
How long the file staysAbout four days after it is ready, then it is gone and you request again.
Your own timeAbout 90 seconds to request, a minute to download.

How big the file is

Usually a few megabytes to a few hundred megabytes as JSON. Heavy direct message use is what pushes an export into the larger end. Requesting Activity only can bring it under ten megabytes, at the cost of leaving out the ads section. reported

TikTok keeps the finished file for about four days after it is ready. Miss that and the request starts again from the beginning.

Read this before you trust a number on this page

Every wait window and every file size here is reported, not measured by us. It comes from the platform's own published help pages and from what people consistently say happens, and platforms change both without telling anyone. When we have a request we timed ourselves, this page will say measured and print the date the measurement was taken. Until then, treat these as the range to plan around rather than a promise.

When the file arrives

When the file lands, you do not have to unzip it or understand it. Drop it into the free TikTok Count and read the real numbers in about ten seconds. It runs entirely in your browser, there is no account, no email field and no card, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the TikTok export

How long does a TikTok data request actually take?

Reported as a few minutes to four days, with most accounts landing inside two days. TikTok's own help text describes up to four days. We have not measured this ourselves, and when we do this page will say measured and give the date.

Should I choose TXT or JSON?

JSON, unless you plan to read every line by hand. TXT is a plain text dump built for a person, and no tool can reliably count it. JSON is what the free Count reads.

Why does my TikTok export look empty?

Usually because only part of it was requested, or the account is newer than it feels. Choose All data on the request screen and check the Ads and data section, which is where the interest categories sit.
