Export guide. Claude. Written 2026-08-26

How to export your Claude data, and how long the wait actually is

Claude takes about four clicks on a computer and then sends an email. The reported wait is minutes, stretching to a few hours for heavy accounts, and the download link expires 24 hours after delivery. The file that matters is conversations.json, which holds every thread, every message and every timestamp. Written 2026-08-26.

That request button opens Claude's own privacy settings screen, in a new tab. We never sit between you and them, never log in as you, and never ask for your password to any platform. When the file lands, the guided steps at /reading take it from there.

The exact taps, in order

Your part of this is about a minute, on a computer. Everything after that is Anthropic taking its time, and nothing you do speeds it up.

  2. Click your initials Lower left corner, then Settings.

  4. Click Export data Confirm, and you are done asking.
  5. Watch your email Anthropic mails a download link when the file is built, usually within minutes.
  6. Download within 24 hours Open the link while signed in to the same account. It expires 24 hours after delivery.

Read this before you trust a number on this page

Every wait window and every file size here is reported, not measured by us. It comes from the platform's own published help pages and from what people consistently say happens, and platforms change both without telling anyone. When we have a request we timed ourselves, this page will say measured and print the date the measurement was taken. Until then, treat these as the range to plan around rather than a promise.

When the file arrives

When the file lands, you do not have to unzip it or understand it. Drop it into the free Claude Count and read the real numbers in about ten seconds. It runs entirely in your browser, there is no account, no email field and no card, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions about the Claude export

How long does the Claude export take?

Reported at minutes for most accounts, stretching to a few hours for heavy ones. Anthropic itself says only that there can be a small delay while the export is generated. We have not measured this ourselves, and when we do this page will say measured and give the date.

Is what Claude remembers about me in the export?

Not reliably. The export is built around your conversations. The memory Claude keeps is managed on its own screen in Settings, where you can read what it holds and change it. If you want the memory itself, read it there.

Why can I not find the export button on my phone?

The export lives in the web app at claude.ai and in the desktop app, not in the iOS or Android apps. Request it on a computer. The email link that arrives can be opened anywhere you are signed in.
